Bigastro council will have to return 1,785 square meters of the municipal sports centre to its owners after a ruling of the Provincial Court. There is no right of appeal. The ruling states that in 1983 the land was sold to the council by a third party who was not a family member and who was not authorised to carry out the transaction.

The Castaño family, who claim to own the land, has finally achieved this judicial resolution after 12 years of litigation. It is now up to a surveyor to establish the affected plot which the City Council will no longer be able to use.

The ruling will also allow the family to recover other plots of land that were sold in the same transaction in Huerta de Bigastro.

“It’s a very bizarre affair, said the current mayor, Teresa Belmonte, who was not involved in the initial transaction. “ Over 25 years ago someone has sold a plot of land to the city that was not theirs to sell,” she said, stating that the affected area corresponds to one of the football training grounds.
