The Japanese macaques that we reported on some weeks ago, living appalling conditions in Guardamar del Segura, have been moved to the United Kingdom, to the Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary rescue centre, close to Merthyr Tydfil in the Brecon Beacons.

The organizations that have been caring for the five macaques said that, once again, it has been a private animal welfare organisation that has been caring for these abandoned primates, insisting on the need for the creation of CITES Rescue Centres in Spain.

Animalia Animal Protection and Great Ape Project reported last November 14 the chaotic situation and abandonment in which the five Japanese macaques were living in Guardamar. These animals lived on a private estate that housed a “private collection” of animals of different species. The macaques were also in tiny cages full of excrement accumulated over time; all a source of infection and degrading hygienic conditions.

Pedro Pozas, the director of Project Great Ape Spain, showed his satisfaction saying that the animals will now be under the care of a centre of prestige and where they will live in far better conditions than they have experienced as part of the private collection in Guardamar.
