Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, held a telephone conversation on Monday afternoon with the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, in which he congratulated him on his election victory.

The President-elect of the United States expressed his enormous affection for the people of Spain to and told him about his time in Barcelona, which he described as a wonderful city.

During the course of the conversation, which lasted 20 minutes, the two leaders expressed a desire to maintain the high levels of confidence that exist in bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as preserve the importance of trans-Atlantic relations.

Various issues on the international political agenda where discussed during the conversation. A special focus was placed on issues relating to security and defence policy, and the global fight against Jihadi terrorism. Spain and the United States are partners and allies that share common values and challenges. The two countries form part of the International Coalition against Jihadism.

In their conversation, the two leaders also examined the consequences of Brexit and the global economic situation. President Rajoy told the President-elect of the United States that he is convinced that sustained and strong economic growth needs to be supported in Spain and Europe in order to create jobs and reduce social inequalities.
