Residents of Polop were stunned on Monday morning on learning that the second arrest made by officers of the Guardia Civil in connection with the assassination of former mayor Alejandro Ponsoda two years ago was a popular member of the local community.
Named as Salvador RG it is understood that he was born and raised in the area currently both owning and managing a shoe shop in the town centre.
Salvador is the second person arrested in connection with the murder following the detention of a 34 year old male in Albatera last Thursday.
The latest arrest was made on Sunday afternoon when the detainee was leaving a local coffee shop in the town centre. It was witnessed by a number of his friends who initially thought the Guardia had picked up the wrong man. One colleague said that he is just a normal man. He has lots of friends in the area and no one on this earth would ever have connected him to the murder.
The police were keeping tight lipped over the detention and at the time of writing have still not confirmed either the relationship of the individual with the crime or the reason for his arrest.
Another inhabitant said that there had been little mention of the crime in the last 2 years and it has only been recently that residents have started talking about it again. No body has had anything to say.
“However recent occurrences have the murder once again in everybody’s minds but even so, no one could have envisaged seeing Alexandro being driven away by the Guardia Civil in an unmarked police car on Sunday afternoon” he said.
For his part, the mayor of Polop, Juan Cano (PP), confirmed that the Guardia spent most of Sunday and Monday searching the individual’s house and a further announcement is anticipated in the coming hours
