The 7th Juan José Saura Memorial Beach Handball Tournament took place on Torre de la Horadada's Playa del Puerto last week with many members of the public in attendance.
Generously supported by local businesses and the Valencian Handball Federation, there were teams taking part from all over Alicante and Murcia.
Of the six male juvenile teams, Pilar de la Horadada came in 3rd, but of 12 adult men's teams Horadada failed to get through the quarter finals. A new addition this year was four adult women's teams.
Most of the tournament took place in the sunshine, but artificial lighting was in place for the final which went on until 10:30pm, when Mayor Ignacio Ramos García presented the prizes.
The male juvenile champions were "Alinghi Boys," from Cartagena, followed by the team from Roldán. The Horadada. Senior women's champions were "Toris Murcia," then "Alma de Cantero," from Elda, and "Oriholanas," from Orihuela.
Senior men's champions were "Sport Dol-Mar Torrevieja," ahead of C.B. Orihuela and A.D. Loma Roldán.
Trophies were awarded for best goalkeeper and player, as well as a commemorative goody bag for all those taking part, who also had a picnic service available to them throughout.
At the end of the tournament Horadada captain, José Miguel Sánchez Flores touchingly handed over a beautiful bouquet of flowers to the mother of local handball player José Juan Saura in who's memory the tournament is held. José was tragically killed in a road accident 7 years ago.
