It’s not often losers are celebrated, but when it comes to losing weight, it was celebrations all round last Monday night when weight watchers came together for the first local weight loss competition. Organised by Annette Bray to recognise the achievements and commitments of dieters at her La Marina, Quesada and Torrevieja groups, the competition attracted a number of entrants. “There is a national Weightwatchers competition, but I wanted something more local.” Explains Annette. “And when Looking Good Boutique kindly donated two pairs of tummy tuck jeans, I thought they would be a good prize for the winners and I announced the competition. It’s not based on actual weight loss, more about dedication to it, changing your lifestyle and outlook.”
As people were busy voting during the UK elections earlier this month, Annette’s members were voting for their finalists and 7 made it through to Monday night and it was glitz and glamour all the way. Dressed and styled by Looking Good Boutique and the team from Hair OTT, each lady elegantly and eloquently took their place on the stage before sharing their inspiring and touching stories of their weight gain and now, ultimately, weight loss and the impact it has made on their lives. Included in those stories was an emotional Jade Bolton. At just 18, she was the youngest finalist and has been going to Weightwatchers for just 5 months but says she is already seeing and feeling the difference. “I’m not just losing the weight, I’m also stopping putting it on which is great. I’ve still got a long way to go but I already feel the difference. I feel great!”
At the other end of the scale Lorraine Bishop was the oldest finalist, being in her seventies but admitting she felt like a forty-something inside and now, she was on the way to getting that body back also. “I joined for my health as I had very high blood pressure and could barely walk along the aisles at the market without needing to stop and sit down but now I walk 2km a day and I love it.” Speaking of being a larger lady she said, “I felt like people were judging me and they didn’t want to go out with me as I was slow, I just gave up living to be honest.” Since joining in March 2009, Lorraine has lost an incredible 26 kilos and was voted the winner in the 8-16 dress size category much to her delight and amazement and hopes other people will be inspired.
In the 18-24 dress size category, Liesl Cavender picked up first place. “I was amazed and shocked.” She said after the realisation sunk in. “A lot of the ladies have already lost a lot of their weight and I’m still starting out really having lost 2 stones in 12 weeks.” Leisl piled on the pounds after moving to Spain and shunned away from the beach but now hopes to be a beach babe after changing her dietary habits and is determined to carry on losing the weight.
As well as winning the tummy tuck jeans, both ladies will receive a full makeover and pampering session from Hair OTT to help them look as good as they now feel.
