REPLY TO DRIVING OVER LEMONS.
Dave Bull / 2009-09-10 14:10:24
After reading in the letters column (31st August) the account by Mike Petty, re the recent events of The Lemon Tree Bowls Club.
I feel that it warrants a reply from me, as the then president in order to clear up a few points which if Mike had taken the time to collect together the facts he might see things in a completely different light.
Firstly Mike the committee resigned en masse not because of what the owner was proposing but rather the way in which it was done. This was by means of a type written order as such which was given to a committee member to give out to the rest of the committee prior to a meeting.
Had the owner chose to discuss it with the committee instead of going off to lunch things would certainly have been different. However this was not to be and the committee decided that this was to be the straw that broke the camels back and the rest you know. You also ask why I left one other club. I will tell you. All my life I have sought to be honest and open in everything I do. As it happened certain other individuals within the club were not being quite as open as I thought they should have been, leaving me no choice but to leave. That same honesty and openness has once again caused me trouble at The Lemon Tree. By informing the members of certain aspects of the club that would undoubtedly affect them I now find myself at odds with the owners. You then go on to assume that I had something to do with the setting up of El Rancho. But there you go again Mike, you could not be more wrong. You should be looking closer to home. I did not know anything about El Rancho until I was asked as Greenguage representative to give a quote for the carpet. As far as I knew there were only four people who were originally involved and they continued to play for Lemon Tree every week so how did they keep that from you as the team captain. Also I am assured that meetings were held with the owner of El Rancho long before the committee resigned. I will certainly agree with you in one aspect and that is that the Lemon Tree was beginning to become quite a successful and friendly club. I submit to you that all of this unhappy affair could have been prevented if certain events at the club were carried out in a more diplomatic and friendly manner. I will end by telling now that I am saddened by what has happened because I was happy as a member and president of what I considered a very very friendly club and one that had a lot of potential.
PS. In all my time there I never heard one complaint about the sandwiches. In fact this is what made The Lemon Tree different from other clubs.
Len Chance.
Phew…I was worried there that you weren’t going to mention the sandwiches…all the rest pales into insignificance, cucmber or marmite? ED.
