I’m on vacation at the moment, so I put this column together several weeks ago. As I sat down to write it, I had a sudden flight of fantasy about all the nice things that might happen between my writing this column and you actually reading it.

Has Ronaldo realised he’d be better off playing for my beloved West Ham than Real Madrid? Surely a midweek third round cup tie away at Barnsley is more attractive than a Champions League fixture in the Bernabeu against Manchester United?

Have Aston Martin announced that the V8 Vantage is now available at an 80% discount to blokes with a Christian name of Phil and a surname of Driver?

And has Michelle Pfeiffer grown tired of life in LA and decided to move in next door to me, into a house that needs a few “jobs” doing from time to time?

Ok, it was all a fantasy. I’ll return home to discover that West Ham’s star signing is a reject from the Italian Serie B, it was actually Skoda who were offering the discount, and that although Ms. Pfeiffer has, indeed, moved in next door, she apparently does all her own DIY.

Was I tired and in desperate need of a break when I wrote this column? You betcha!
