LA SIESTA GOLF SOCIETY ST PATRICK’S DAY
Contributor / 2010-03-16 14:42:33
The day dawned pretty nippy but with the promise of some 15 degrees by noon. 40 members and guests, some dressed in shorts (ouch!!), took part in a team game sponsored by our Irish contingent. Some turned up in fancy dress, others in more recognisable golf gear, but the fun was there to be had. One compulsory rule – you had to wear at least one piece of green attire. Several buggies even had the flag flying!
This was our eagerly awaited annual ‘Irish Do’, held at our home course, Campoamor, where we play 3 times a week. Chief organiser this year, Mike O’Reagan ably assisted by Simon Treacy, Tom Jennings, Sean Daly and Pat Brady. Throughout the day the odd miniature bottle of whiskey, or can of Guinness, could be found on the tee or even in the hole on the green. As always, the course was in good condition and a pleasure to play. The game, teams of 4 – 3 scores to count on hole 1, 2 on hole 2 then repeated until hole 9 when all scores counted. This was repeated on the back nine. Different! But very interesting and entertaining – and some good scores.
Team prizes:
1st Maureen Cox, Ben Hines, Gerry Gibson and Mike Flynn with 107 points.
2nd Roger Bellingham, Mike Hughes, Colin Layton and Ian Morgan with 103 points.
3rd Bobby Barnett, Pam Howard, Brian McGuigan and Ray Scott, also with 103 points
Two Nearest the Pins went to Gerry Gibson and Dave Stockton
Thanks go to President, Ray Scott, and Pam Howard for manning the desk in the morning and ensuring everybody got off on time and generally ironing out any wrinkles. Similarly, collecting and counting the cards in the afternoon. The usual ‘apres ski’ socialising took place (that’s drinking!) but many had to rush off to prepare for the evening ‘bash’ – hairdo’s etc, including some of the ladies!
For our major events we tend to use our Campoamor Club House and Restaurant in the evening. On this occasion our Irish friends arranged for ‘It Takes Two’ to provide the music for dancing. A very professional performance indeed, with music for all tastes. Prize giving was presented by our President, Mike O’Reagan and Simon Treacy. Great prizes followed by a free raffle – again great prizes.
Throughout the evening our resident photographer, Roger Bellingham, could be seen prancing around like something demented, probably in the hope of catching someone eating peas off their knife, and generally snapping at anything that moved. However, as always, the results were superb. Our photograph shows the winning foursome in the company of the President, Simon Treacy and Mike O’Reagan.
Wining and dining and dancing continued until well after midnight to end another excellent ‘Irish Do’. Our sincere thanks to our Irish lads.
