THE CELTS GOLF CLUB

We had our second monthly open competition at La Serena golf course our new home base. What a good choice we made when we decided to relocate to this fine golf course. Initially our concern related to the number of balls that may or may not find their way into the various water courses. I don’t know if it is luck or the fact that our golfers are accurate off the tee, anyway there has not been a single whimper about the topic.
The course is improving daily and was well presented for our competition. Thanks must go to the hard work of the green keepers and Bruno and his office staff. They are extremely polite and very attentive to their clients, which is much appreciated by all the members.
We are delighted to welcome to the club all the new members. In the last month we have registered with the federation 12 new members and they will soon be able to take advantage of the very competitively priced tournaments offered by Valencia. For example last week at Villaitana the entrance fee for the golf was 18 euro, not bad especially in these difficult times. The new members have certainly proved their metal and have wasted no time in appearing in the winner’s enclosure.
We had 36 members and guests competing on the day and with little or no wind scoring was expected to be good. It was decided to have two member’s categories and a visitors section and the results were as follows; in the members section, Valencia registered member’s prize, Eddie Wall 34 points. Visitors John McCarthy with 36 points. In category II we had a family affair with the Ellenders competing for the first and second prize, on this occasion Geoff came out on top with 39 points and Bev on 36 points. In Category I second place went to Dave Mullett with 36 points and the winner of the category Eddie Stapleton with 38 points. The gross was won by our Captain Denis McCormack with 30 points. The nearest the pin prizes were won by Tom Halpin holes 6 and 16. Eddie Stapleton holes 7 and 9 and hole 17 John O’Brien and hole 18 Camillus Fitzpatrick. We also presented the Club engraved weekly Galway brandy crystal glasses to the much deserved winners, Bev Ellender 36 points and Ritchie Heaton 46 points.
Unfortunately we had two or three late cancellations, in fact one cancellation was sent at 1am on the day of the competition. As you can imagine it takes a lot to organise the day and at least two days notice if you are not able to appear would be appreciated. We welcome to the club all our new members and I hope you had a good day. With so few lady members it is very refreshing to see them compete at the highest levels and demonstrating their competitive streak. Can I remind members that membership is now due for renewal.
