Now the little village Hondí³n de las Nieves offers the opportunity of trout fishing. This is unique in the province of Alicante and the Communidad Valencia.
The sunken fishing pond is situated 15 kilometers from Elche at the foot of the Sierra de Crevillente.
Trout fishing is very possible, even in here the warm climate in Spain. Hondí³n de las Nieves lies at 400 meters and the average temperature there is lower than on the coast. Owner Jan Keijsers tells us that this means fishing is possible during most months of the year.
During the summer months the temperature of the water is too high at which time there is no fishing. The remaining 8 or 9 months however is very pleasant, adds partner Marguerite.
Every morning, 7 days a week, between 8 and 12.30 hours, Hondí³n Trucha is open. Five trout are put in the pond for every angler and the catch can be taken home. Groups of more than 10 people can hire the pond during each afternoon.
Trout fishing is all action; you must encourage the fish to bite and this is only possible by searching constantly for the correct bait. Fishing with fly or hook; in both ways you have to remain active.
To those who are not familiar with trout fishing the owners are willing to explain how it is done.
People who do not have a rod, can hire their fishing gear on the spot. A fishing licence can be obtained at bank Rural Caja. There is a branch in Hondí³n de las Nieves. The licence costs just 7,61 euros but you need to take with you a copy of your passport or NIE. Each licence lasts for 1 year.
Anyone who likes to fish or even just look around is welcome.
