Tuesday 31st January 2012 – Medal
Low temperatures even though the sun was shining but a chilly breeze ensured that all stayed inside until the last moment before we went out for the monthly Medal. 28 players, including 5 visitors, 3 Danish ladies amongst them, a really good turnout for today. Ray, Keith S, Terry and me started at the 2nd which was one the NTPs.
Ray landed his tee shot about 2 meters from the pin and subsequently scored the birdie, a perfect way to begin your round! His joy was short-lived however, because while we waited to tee off on the 3rd we saw one ball from the next group land about half a meter from the pin, taking the NTP away from Ray. In the end it turned out to be the closest, not to be beaten. Near the end of our first half we came to the 9th, the other NTP hole.
Again Ray landed his ball closest which luckily for him held its ground this time. The tension must have been too great for him for his game gradually fell away as for Terry’s as well. Going from one bunker over the green to another wasn’t very helpful in achieving a good final score. Luck was a scarce commodity anyway as I heard after the game. Frank playing rather well during 17 of the 18 holes and keeping up with the later winner, found his Waterloo at the demanding 7th, his last hole. After two tee shots into the water, his third tee shot bounced over the water and ended in the bushes, so after a drop his next shot onto the green was number 8!
The conclusion was a 10 and a score of net 60, where a normal 4 or 5 would have given him second place. Bad luck Frank, but I must say that he took it like a man, not in the least shaken when we drove home!
Checking the cards took a very long time but finally the presentation started with the announcement of the NTPs, on the 2nd for Dave Smith and on the 9th for Ray himself. The prize for the best visitor went to one of the Danish ladies, Margit Sandheer, hcp 18 and a score of net 55. In third place after countback finished Ian Henderson, hcp 7 and a score of net 57 while in second we saw Dave Swan, hcp 14 and a score of net 55. The winner today and taking a very nice “Medal” home was John O’Brien, hcp 8 and a score of net 52, who related the misfortune of Frank by the way. Well done John and playing El Plantio three times a week does pay off, you see!
A final word for Tommy and Kai who couldn’t be with us as are both in hospital, we all wish you a speedy recovery!
Next Tuesday’s competition 31st January at El Plantio is team game, Yellow Ball this time, so once more an opportunity to show your ability as a team player. Put your name down by the Monday before and make sure to be there on Tuesday on time. See you all in good health!
