MISTREATMENT OF PETS

Dear Editor,
It is appalling and unbelievable the manner it which some dog owners ill treat these animals. In my nine years in Spain I have seen the following:- A woman driving a 4x4 type vehicle ,a man sitting at the rear of the vehicle with his feet hanging out dragging a dog behind the vehicle. THIS SEEMS TO BE THEIR IDEA OF TAKING THEIR DOG FOR A WALK.
There was another man who took his dog everyday for a walk and gave the impression that he loved and cared for the dog. However, when he decided to return to his homeland, he left the dog on the community . It was seen straying about for a couple of weeks . It was eventually run over by a vehicle.
There was couple who moved about 5 miles away ,and left their dog tied to a tree in the front garden. The animal was given food and water by neighbours’ reported the matter to the local paper and after a published article appeared in the paper ,the dog was collected and taken to a a country home.
I know of dogs that have been confined to small gardens for several years ,and have never been taken for a walk.
Recently I saw two separate occurrences of men on bicycles pulling their dogs along the roads .The dog trotting as fast as it can, trying to keep up with the riders.
These animals are taken for quite a few miles every day on the hard surface of the road.I would imagine that they would need time to recover from such ordeal.
They are however put through the same suffering and ill treatment on a daily basis.
They do not stop or are even given a drink of water, and certainly cannot be enjoying such long stressful walks.
Dogs enjoy a long walks where they are free to sniff and have a run around.
These dog owners are deliberately subjecting these animals to MENTAL AND PHYSICAL TORTURE..
The most disturbing aspect is the mentality and attitude of the owners, who all live in highly developed societies, and are quite aware (or should be) of how to care for domestic animals They call their pets.
They however treat animals in the same way the majority of uneducated people in very poor countries do with no compassion at all.
If by chance you are one of those who ill-treat your dog and have read this letter, please reconsider your attitude and treatment of your dog who I SUPPOSE YOU CONSIDER AS YOUR PET.
Yours faithfully,
