EUROPEAN AMLIN CUP CHALLENGE 3RD ROUND C.R. LAVILA V C.A.BRIVE

Spanish champions, La Vila achieved their best scoreline in the European Amlin Cup Challenge at the weekend against French side CA Brive. Brive had a predictable but complicated victory with La Vila still showing signs of improvement thanks to an exemplary attitude already seen in recent cup and league games.
From the start Brive showed their intentions by playing outstanding rugby and taking an early 7 point lead with a try and conversion by Boussage. Only to see Lavila hit back quickly with two penalties by Nick McCashin taking the score to 6-7. Both teams were evenly matched and Brive scored a 2nd try after some good build up play. After sustained pressure by LaVila, Nick McCashin put a neat kick in behind the Brive defence for Marcus Poggi to gather and score under the posts to the delight of the home crowd. McCashin converted to take the score to 13-14. Disappointingly LaVila conceded two converted tries to take the scoreline at halftime to 13-28.
After the break, Brive played with more intensity which made La Vila defend heroically for the majority of the second half. However when LaVila got their hands on the ball they put together a few sequences of play which stretched the Brive defence. The closing period saw La Vila go through numerous phases to put Juanmar Quirante, through the almost insurmountable Brive defence and over the line in the corner, unconverted by Mc Cashin for the last play of the game.
Coach Mark Hewitt said ‘The boys really stepped up their game again today, with some outstanding individual performances, notably from captain Matt Cook, Jon Phipps and Nick McCashin. We now have to play with the same attitude, cutting out individual errors for our return fixture with Brive on Thursday. This will be a real test for LaVila with such a short turn around between games stretching our resources.’
