THE CUEVA DE SAN ROQUE IS BEING DEMOLISHED IN ALMERIA

Work has already started to demolish the cave which is known locally as Conan’s cave, as it was here where Conan the Barbarian was filmed in 1982 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was also used to film some scenes of Indiana Jones.
Local residents are angry that it has not been protected as part of the area's cultural heritage and is being demolished to make way for a commercial centre. A demonstration on Saturday said the work is also affecting other nearby caves. The Save The Molineta Platform which comprises about thirty associations, has taken legal action in filing a formal complaint with the Office of the Environment against this performance considering that it exceeds the limits of preventive measures for the consolidation land at the risk of landslides and subsidence of rock cavities. Save The Molineta and the neighbourhood association in the indictment do not describe the effects of deforestation are having on the Cave of Conan, but warn about the impact on the landscape bordering the Molineta, “We denounce the conduct of these books that will leave the territory in a state of abandonment and desolation, at the very gateway to the city of Almeria.”
They argue that “the said mall is not licensed (and does not have a) proposed date of opening” so they do not understand the 'need' for these works. However, the construction company says the cave was dangerous as the roof was about ready to collapse.
