King Juan Carlos will leave the highly competitive sport of competition sailing on the last day of the Trofeo Conde de Godo in Barcelona, at the close of the Audi MedCup 2011 championship, on the 17 September.
The Bribón I, launched in 1972, was the ship who opened the series. José Cusi had not competed with the King and the ship was acquired by the owner at the Fair of Valencia, where the monarch also bought a twin model, called Shere Khan.
It was after the Munich Olympics, when the then Prince Juan Carlos took part in the Dragon class sailing and then decided to join forces with José Cusi, who began competing with the Bribón II, a 9 metre vessel, representing the Real Club Nautico de Barcelona.
King Juan Carlos and José Cusi intensely followed all kinds of sports: "together we took on the Olympic Games, World and European championships. Every day we had our time spent preparing our boats for regattas."
Cusi said he has been able to realize their projects through the unconditional support he has always had from their sponsor, La Caixa.
Numerous cups were secured by the duo, with a track record that was the envy of many, "This is what makes me feel alive, working for one purpose and then do it, as in life, and in my work.
So the king and I have much in common," said 77 year old Cusi, who is four years older than the King. He continued to stress his pride in working with the King for so many years, and how he was humbled to have served such a great man.
