CULTURAL CALENDAR UPDATES

The latest instalment of the cultural calendar for Almería is set to offer the most diverse range of events to date, whilst still maintaining the traditional routes that have placed the area in the high point of many a visitors and residents hearts throughout the cultural history.
Renowned Spanish singer David Bisbal will perform three concerts in the spring, before Columbian singer Shakira rocks the city in June.
During a press conference, the mayor, Luis Rogelio Rodríguez Comendador, praised the visit by both of these artists, the first being on the 14, 15 and 16 April at the Auditorio Maestro Padilla, where David Bisbal fans will no doubt flock to fill the venue, and how later on, Shakira will take over the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos.
In addition to these flagship concerts, Rodríguez-Commander has said that the entire cultural program covers all genres from musical concerts to literature through intercultural music of Alamar, flamenco, theatre, cinema, opera, poetry and exhibitions.
He stated that there will be a total of 28 concerts, including three specifically organised to attract families, five stage plays, five film screenings and three exhibitions. As for music, there will be twelve concerts in total, featuring a range of pop, rock and flamenco-pop-fusion, four of which are part of the 4th Ciclo Música de Autor.
Between 1 April and 5 May artists like Toni Zenet, Quique González y Desbandados, and Cesar Maldonado will perform at the Auditorio Maestro Padilla and the Apollo Theater whilst there will also be a tribute to Antonio Vega, who died exactly two years ago.
On April 23, Dani Martin, the lead Singer of rock group del Canto del Loco, will return to Almería at a concert to be held in the Palacio de los Juegos Mediterráneos, in a concert organized by the Department of Youth.
In May, a new up and coming talent of Antonio Cortés will be playing his unique style of flamenco-pop-fusion along with Doble Sentido.
June is the month most widely anticipated, when Shakira takes to the stage with her Sale el sol tour, which is her fifth concert tour to support her sixth and seventh studio albums, She Wolf and Sale el Sol. With a total of 95 shows, 44 of which are in Europe, Almería is one of the few privileged cities, only one of the four in Spain, that can boast attracting such an international superstar. The concert takes place on the 1st June, in between the Valencia and Madrid legs, and tickets are already on sale.
Classical music will also have a place in this calendar with three concerts. On Sunday April 3, the Youth Orchestra will perform with the Almería Etcetera group in a family concert called Peter and the Wolf to benefit Hombre Maestro Padilla Auditorium. Then on Saturday, April 9 the Orquesta Ciudad de Almería Ocal Choir will perform in a concert of Sacred Music at the Cathedral. On Saturday 7th May, the Ocal choir will sing at the Auditorio Maestro Padilla la zarzuela Agua.
Rodríguez Comendador, who was accompanied by the Councillor for Culture, Lola de Haro also announced the twelve Festival Alamar, with the intention of nurturing a “meeting place for diverse cultures and incomparable space for peace, dialogue, integration and solidarity”, and will feature voice and rhythms from Africa, East and Central Europe, alongside the best flamenco-fusion. This will be held from the 10th to 19th June in various locations across the city.
This is just a taste of some of the events coming up over the next few months. There will also be a book fair, poetry festival and lots more besides. Full details can be obtained from the town hall and the cultural department, or via the tourist information centres in the city.
