Joaquín Galant, the lawyer for Maria del Carmen Garcia, the mother who was imprisoned for setting fire to a man who raped her youngest daughter in Benejúzar when she was just 13 years of age, handed a petition bearing 5,000 signatures in to Judicial authorities in Elche on Wednesday to support an application for her pardon.
The man died several days after the incident from the severity of burns and Garcia was subsequently sentenced to 9 years in jail for the offence but later, on submitting a defence of insanity at an appeal, the Supreme Court lowered the sentence to four years thereby reducing the penalty by two degrees.
Having served 12 months in prison Garcia was released on parole but her lawyer said that she could be readmitted at any time. Her husband is currently suffering from throat cancer.
The signatures have all been collected in recent weeks in a number of different localities in and around the Vega Baja.
Galant hopes that the petition will go some way toward obtaining a pardon for Garcia due to her current ‘incurable mental illness’.
