Figures collated following the end of the celebration of the Nit de l'Albà yesterday (Friday) reported two serious and 20 slight injuries as a result of the handling of fireworks.
Among those seriously hurt was a 24 year-old who suffered second and third degree burns to his hands, legs and genitals following the exploding of fireworks that he was carrying in his pockets. At around eight o'clock in the evening another man also recorded burns of the second and third degree to his left hand, Both were taken to the Burns Unit of Hospital de Alicante.
A further 22 people, all of whom suffered minor burns and injuries, were allowed to return home after treatment.
Of the 22 people served, the older a man of 83 years, while the child was two years, and in both cases had minor burns. The oldest was a man of 83 whilst the youngest was just 2 years of age.
The Councillor for Citizen security, Emilio Martinez, said that t was one of the quieter nights in recent years. In 2008 there were 35 people requiring hospital treatment whilst last year that figure had been reduced to 33. He suggested that the inclement weather might well have been partly responsible for the reduction.
