One of our premier competitions, the Monte Pego Cup, was contested today by 43 members; the format was Singles Stableford and there were no divisions, so six main prizes were up for grabs as well as two Nearest the Pins. The day at Oliva Nova, which continues to be turned out in superb condition (although the greens seemed a fraction slower today – or was that just me?), started rather warmly but then our friendly Mediterranean Zephyr wafted over us and we played on in very comfortable conditions. Unfortunately, every cloud has a silver lining and the breeze proved a little problematical for the golfers and is reflected in the scores.
There were two Summer Knockout matches played today, with Janine Ackerman, who has an enviable record in this competition, beating the resilient Dave Phillips who finally capitulated on the 17th green, 2 & 1; in the other match, Martin Gates ran out a very comfortable 7 & 6 winner against Dave Pointer, whose rather pedestrian (although in a buggy!) pace of play caused some wag to suggest that Dave probably thought he lost it on the 18th!
Our Captain Brian West (more of whom later) called on Dave Pointer once again to announce the winners of our Balls in the Water and 2’s competitions. There were two 2’s today, with Trinnie Sutherland confidently sinking his 3 footer on the 16th and, although missing a tiddler on the 3rd for a 2, Russ Peters eventually holed a much longer one for his half share of the pot. There were 124 BIW’s today, with the usual early arrivals getting their choice of the favoured numbers, thus Mike Rees and John Oliffe shared the runners up pot and Captain West (who wasn’t wearing his La Sella hat in the club house today) pocketing the lion’s share with his correct guess.
One of our Nearest the Pins winners managed to get a 2 but the other one didn’t – brickbat to Mike! Trinnie Sutherland was nearest on the 16th and Mike Rees was nearest on the 3rd. Mike was in the same group as Donal Murphy, which must have been frustrating for their playing partners, neither of whom can have finished a sentence because of Mike’s and Donal’s constant interruptions!
The prize winners in the Monte Pego Cup, the trophy to be presented at Wednesday’s Summer BBQ, were as follows:
Sixth – Russ Peters (whose 2nd to the 13th almost reached us on the 14th tee – 80 yards left of the green!) with 33 points off 10.9
Fifth – Peter ‘Are those wrist braces legal?’ Brown with 34 points off 24.8
Fourth – Donna ‘I’ll play off the yellow tees (but doesn’t)’ Green, also with 34 points but off a lower handicap of 13.8
Third – Martin ‘I don’t play two formats in the same round’ Gates, also with 34 points off 7.4
Runner up – Johnnie ’14 out, 22 back’ Nicol with a handicap protecting 36 points off 23.0
Winner – Brian ‘Class act’ Redfearn with a superb 39 points off 8.9
Just one little anecdote this week. As I’ve mentioned in previous missives, Captain West and electric trolley technology have something of an ongoing love/hate relationship. Today, using his remote control, he managed to send his trolley through what he might have thought was a new trolley wash/fairway sprinkler, necessitating a hasty and drenching (but not his head – courtesy of the La Sella hat) scamper through the spray to retrieve it – and then two holes later he sent said trolley crashing into a palm tree some 50 yards away!
Next week’s competition will, once again, be at Oliva Nova, on Tuesday, July 27th with the first tee time at 8:50, registration at 8:15. Details may be found on our website, the address of which is www.pegogolfsociety.net. (Don’t forget to check the play list on Friday to make sure your name is included if you want to play!)
