Over 600,000 euro was thought to be the value of illegal goods seized last year by authorities, goods that were all destined to be sold on the city’s streets and goods which would have done untold damage to the livelihood of legitimate traders working in the area. Now the city council have had enough and are calling for all other regional governments to help them drive unlawful vendors out of the Community before they are allowed to do serious damage to local business. The goods that were seized by the Policia Local numbered more than 30,000 items.
In just one month close to Marbella beaches over 9,700 activities associated with street vending were closed down and on Wednesday, in Puerto Banus, representatives of the Chamber of Commerce were invited to witness the destruction of many of the goods which were supervised by the Councillor for Citizen Security, Francisca Caracuel.
In a statement to the press Snr Caracuel said that his actions underlined the determination of the city council to rid itself of such illegal practices which are causing unreasonable difficulties on the entire business fabric of the city."
The mayor stressed that his government team "maintains an attitude of zero tolerance to such situations, which are always increased in the summer. To counteract the increase, Caracuel stated that more than 70 agents and officials who contribute toward the Beach Plan have acted in over 9,700 cases of illegal street trading in the last month alone, from 15 June to 15 July.
He said that "it is imperative that there be greater involvement by the competent authorities. All the weight can not fall on local councils,” said the councilor ,
Similarly, Caracuel made an appeal to townsfolk "that will raise awareness of the importance of not buying counterfeit products because it is a sale that causes great harm to the business of Marbella. It creates "irreparable harm" especially to small and medium sized businesses in the municipality.
Most of the items confiscated from illegal traders are destroyed in the Solid Waste Plant in Casares. However, some of them are destroyed each year in Puerto Banus which is witnessed by the public and the media.
