CARRATRACA MAYOR GIVES OWNERS OF ILLEGAL HOMES HOPE

Owners of illegally built homes in Spain have reason to be a little hopeful. There are signs that the Junta de Andalucía is showing more flexibility on the subject of the demolition of these homes.
In Carratraca where the I.U. Mayor resigned in order to avoid having to carry out such demolition orders, his replacement in the post, Francisco Duque, has met with technicians from the Junta, including the Junta’s Delegate in Málaga, María Gámez, to discuss the situation.
Now it has been decided to look at the problem, case by case, with reports on each to be drawn up individually. The Junta will also help the local Town Hall to draw up the new PGOU Urban Plan to control future development. This means that all the current demolition orders in the village, some 100 in number, are effectively suspended.
And in Vera, the British couple who have been living in a garage beside the rubble which was once their dream home, have been told they will be assigned a temporary home. The judge who is looking after their case has ordered the local council to assign Helen and Len Prior a similar property to the one they lost. Lawyers acting for the couple have been pressing for compensation and it now appears that their petition will be met.
The protest group AUAN (Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No) who are campaigning against the demolition of property in the area have reported that Helen and Len have found a suitable house and are now awaiting agreement from the council.
