For the second time in two months Pilar de la Horadada’s Town Council has asked local residents to collaborate in trying to combat the plague of red beatles (Picudo Rojo) which is spreading like wildfire amongst the palm trees in the area.
If anyone in the town or surrounding areas suspects their palm tree is affected they should phone 660547327 to enable the Town Hall to come and collect the tree completely free of charge. The problem has extended throughout the region, despite warnings as early as last Autumn, when the plague was first detected. The Valencian Generalitat, who are responsible for the problem, appear to be doing little to combat this destructive pest.
Thousands of palm trees have already been destroyed throughout Murcia, leaving beachfronts looking ragged and parks looking bare. The beatle is believed to have been brought in on cheap palm trees which were imported from Africa to embellish the massive urbanisations which sprang up throughout Murcia a few years ago.
