The province of Alicante closed the year with five additional deaths from maltreatment of partners, two more than in 2008. The number of casualties recorded in the province as similar to those confirmed by Valencia and Madrid, all three regions lagging only behind Barcelona
The year 2009 has been shown to be a black year for the province in terms of abuse and to make matters even worse Alicante finished off the year with five further deaths from domestic violence two more than in 2008 finishing second in the national statistics.
Data from the Queen Sofia Centre, based in Valencia, where the statistics of domestic violence are recorded and investigated, show the Vega Baja region of Alicante topping the list within the region. Three of the five murders occurred in this area, while Alicante city, for the first time in many years, has not recorded a single death.
Unlike the data from the province the national figures have shown a decline in cases, from 76 deaths in 2008 to 60 in 2009, according to the Centro Reina Sofia.
