The recently established Ring Boxing Club had its first success last week when two of its boxers travelled to the Martinez Club in Alicante to take part in an 8 bout amateur contest on Saturday afternoon.
Torrevieja cruiserweight Jose Manuel Gomez (Rubio) was first up when he met local fighter Israel Castejon. It was a match that he won comfortably on points showing no end of improvement since his previous fight last autumn.
Obviously the influence of the club's British trainer Martin Patrick has made all the difference as Rubio was altogether more mobile than when he last put on a pair of gloves.
Patrick's 18 year old son Alfie was the second club boxer to enter the ring, a 4 round lightweight match with Johan O'Dosco. Alfie showed some nimble footwork has he moved quickly around the ring to evade the southpaw's big swinging lefts and as his fast hands outscored O'Dosco in three of the four rounds it was somewhat of a surprise when the referee held up the opponents hand at the end of the final flurry.
However some rather nimble footwork by the chief judge saw the decision quickly reversed as the referee then called Alfie Patrick back into the ring to declare the young La Marina fighter the victor. It seemed that the referee had simply mixed up his right with his left and raised the wrong hand at the end of the fight. So with both Torrevieja based fighters chalking up convincing wins the Ring Boxing club got it's boxing career off to a flying start.
Established for a little under two months the Ring Boxing Club is already forging a reputation on the International boxing scene being the preferred overseas training camp for former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli, the current EBU lightwelterweight champion Souleymane M'Baye, British Supermiddleweight champion Brian Magee and promoter Frank Warren's highly rated lightheavyweight Tobias Webb.
All four boxers will be back in the ring in the coming weeks where they will all be training for upcoming fights, in the case of Magee a shot at the vacant European title in Denmark against Mads Larsen.
But the Ring Boxing Club is not only about International fighters. Owner and trainer Rob Lydon told the Leader that he will be looking to teach 'Boxercise' non contact boxing in the New Year for both men and women. Together with Martin Patrick he will also be organising boxing training specifically for children from just 7 years of age. Of course training for adults is already well supported.
The club is located in the heart of Torrevieja in Calle Bazan No 35, not far from the main church square. It is open most afternoons and evenings, further details of which can be had from Rob on 617 883 203.
