COUNTRY BOWLS REPORT
Lynne Bishop / 2009-11-30 13:32:10
This week Pat Metcalfe and Derek Fielding (the Spanish team and the provincial coaches) came down to the club to offer some valuable coaching to anyone that thought it would be beneficial to them, especially our new bowlers, some of whom look very promising assets to our club. The tuition was very informative to every one that attended and we said a big thank you to both Pat and Derek for giving up their time to make the long journey to Country Bowls.
Also in the week we played a friendly match at El Rancho, twenty nine of us traveled there and those that didn't know the way went in convoy. We were interested to see this new club and all agreed on how nice the complex was. We made use of all eight rinks and did well to win on five of them. It certainly gave us a nice taster for future matches there. On behalf of Country Bowls, thank you for inviting us to come along, it was a most enjoyable morning.
Mondays SABA game this week meant a long trek up to La marina for the Supernovas game against the Pathfinders. Although they won on just two rinks I could see looking at the cards there were some pretty tight games.
Well done to Ron Odell, Chris Darnell & Bill Nutman who were having a low scoring game but picked up two 5's in the second half of the game, enough to finish with a great win of 18-15. Sandra McIlroy, Charlie Watkins & Laurence Tysoe sweated it out until the very end, going into the eighteenth one shot down but winning the two to give them the victory 16-15, a very close call.
Carol Donnellan, Pat Emmett & Dave Rutherford were bringing up the rear and finally took the lead on the fifteenth end, though only briefly as the Pathfinders won the next two ends with enough shots to make it too difficult for our three to win, 17-19.
Paul Plant, Ron Cammack & Bryan Kirk kept plugging away but just stayed that little bit behind and lost 12-17. Chris Nutman, Ray Emmett & Sheila Cammack and Margaret Odell, Dot Davies & Dave Rogers had a bad day at the office. Agg. Shots Supernovas 81(4) - 113(10) Pathfinders.
The Ramblers were at home once again for their Southern league fixture, this time against San Miguel Cougars and had wins on four rinks for ten points. Shirley Verity, Maurice Horswell & Roy Trow had a great win, always in front to finish 24-14. Pat Patton, Maurice Cass & Noel Verity were walking on water, not surprising when Noel has been at sea for a month, well done 19-10, (Shirley & Noel, it's good to have you back). Jenny Chaplin, Dave Chaplin & Ken Cuthbert just did enough to win 17-13 and Geoff Paylor, Terry Padgett & Eric Bishop's had a crucial ending to their game, they played a good first half before letting the opposition catch up.
Going into the last end two shots behind and with a lot to do, especially as the Pathfinders were holding shot, but our guys did us proud and won the end with four shots to win 24-22, well done you three, you had us all worried for a minute.
Ann Horswell, Peter Scott, Brian Patton, Lynne Bishop, Sheila Cammack & Dave Rogers all decided to have a rest and let their opponents take the points, we are too kind. (or should have stayed in bed!!!).
Agg. Shots were incredibly close...Ramblers 106(10) - 104(4) Pathfinders.
The friendly rinks game was played and won by Charlie Watkins, George Thomson, Ron Cammack & Laurence Tysoe 19-14 well done chaps.
Hartlepool is still top of the football league, an update on that next week.
Don't forget to get your names down for the Christmas lunch which will be served in the restaurant following a 'fun bowls' morning Tuesday15th Dec, fancy dress optional.
