10 MAN TORRY ENOUGH FOR VICTORY
Andy Hermida / 2009-11-29 18:19:06
Torry are now on a roll 3 matches 3 victories as they go climbing up the table, again a victory carved from a 10 man display in the second half saw the destruction of Ribarroja as they had no answer to the Torry determination that has grown in the last 3 weeks since the club admitted they had been struggling with funding due to the economic crisis and the lack of sponsors.
Torry made an attempt to bring as many people into the ground as possible by reducing the entrance fee to 5€ for all, but with the weather and the football on TV the crowd was reduced to 315. This was a request by the Spanish Peña who confirmed that they could get 2,000 into the ground. Even though this was tried previously and failed the club Socios voted for this initiative as the Spanish peña were insistent that they could get the numbers in.
Torry put on a masterful display by reducing the opposition to one attempt on target from a free kick in added time. Other than that they were no match for their resilient hosts who gave everything in this match, brilliant play and brilliant goals.
The first goal was by Aitor who received a clearance from defence and lobbed it over the oncoming keeper in the 40th minute. From jubilation to grief though as the second half brought a second yellow card for the goalscorer and Torry were reduced to 10 men. You would have thought that Torry’s backs were against the wall but they were having none of it, they kept attacking and with 9 minutes remaining Maikel from outside the box scored a screamer of a goal to make the game safe for the home side.
There were a number of players who could be considered man of the match, Maikel, Torres, Piquero, who all gave everything, but Torres was the one that was full of running at the end and never gave up.
The pity of it all was the lowest crowd since the club were promoted from the Preferente 4 years ago. It’s ironic the club need the money, the players need wages and with several victories now under their belts and starting to play well the spectators abandon them. Still that’s football I suppose.
Next week Torry are away to Villarreal C. This game is scheduled for Sunday at 5pm but normally they play on Saturday at 12 noon so please check the Torry Army website for travel information www.fctorrevieja.eu. Remember that this is a free entrance to the game so all you pay is the 10€ coach travel.
