LA SIESTA BOWLS CLUB

Club members will fondly remember Tony Humphries, who following a period of treatment in Torrevieja hospital, regrettably passed away 2 weeks ago in Santa Pola nursing home. A member of the Golds team for many a year, Tony overcame the loss of sight in one eye, refusing to let such an infliction interfere with a good game of bowls. One of lives good guys, Tony's warm personality will be sadly missed. RIP Tony.
Last call for enrolment in the forthcoming beginner’s course. Instructor Brian Gardiner will be coaching novice bowlers, on 3 consecutive Saturdays (28 Nov, 5 Dec and 12 Dec), at La Siesta bowls club. Any interested parties should contact Brian on 966 78 6264, to register on the course.
In last week’s Enterprise league div 1, the Apollos recorded a resounding 10-4 victory away against Emerald Isles Saturns. This result puts them now only 4 points behind leaders Emerald Isles Plutos. Well done: C Jackson, D Buchanan, H Barnby 17-11. K Parker, B Gardiner, J Cooper 24-17. S Lawson, B Fraser, D Livesey 28-9. S Chorley, D Eccles, D Pickwick 17-6.
Over at San Luis, the Pioneers had a div 2 match against the Vulcans. Two pretty evenly matched sides drew rinks wise, but Pioneers came out on top overall shots (109-91), to take the overall points by 8-6. Here are the winners: R Sinclair, T Baylis, V Mahomet 22-12. S Mahomet, A Bowers, R Chambers 24-10. H Clarke, N Murphy, D Souter 23-10.
You can't teach a granny to suck eggs, but ever thought about bringing her along to a Weds chicken and egg drive? If she did, she would be amazed at the fantastic prizes on offer. For example, an oven ready chicken (won by Rod Land), a vintage bottle of wine (Fred Trott trotted off with that), or a dozen eggs, which granny could suck on till her heart’s content (that's if she could prise them away from Vince Laing). Alternatively, she could attend Brian Gardiner's coaching course!!
Southern league roundup time. Peter Hutton's blues have been hovering around the A div top spot all season, winning or just losing every week. Last week was no exception, for a hard fought 6-8 defeat, away at Quesada against the Swallows, typified their season. Although only 2 rinks won, it was handsomely enough to earn their team 2 bonus points. Hip, hip, hooray: B Cooper, S Pond, J Cooper 22-9. J Rothwell, I Kadwell, G Rothwell 32-9.
Not to be outdone, Maggie Hunter's golds went one better. A short trip to San Luis to play a B div match against the tigers was never going to be easy, but 4 rinks performed well enough to give their side a well deserved 9-5 victory. Yabba, dabba, doo: S Gallup, P Knapp, D Livesey 16-11. F Kay, G Richardson, M Hunter 24-12. K Knapp, T Heaslewood, H Barnby 22-17. W Jordan, T Baylis, B Lane 14-14.
Talk about a Jekyll and Hyde team - the silvers can't seem to decide which camp they belong to. How can a team win 14-0 away one week, lose 0-14 (at home) the next, and then bounce back in style to win 14-0 again the following week? At home to Monte Mar Toreadors, they won on every rink, a perfect remedy to recover from the previous week’s humiliation. Bouncebackability: S Chorley, J Clarke, I Kenyon 29-10. G Sheldon, V Mahomet, R Sheldon 26-15. H Clarke, B McDonnell, J Mullarkey 20-13. P Rhodes, R Sinclair, R Needham 24-17. S Lawson, J Johnson, B Fraser 15-10. A Bowers, S Hibberd, C Chorley 19-17.
