ANDALUCIA “SUFFERING MOST” FROM UNEMPLOYMENT

Of the 17 self-governing “communities” of Spain, Andalucia comes bottom of the table in terms of unemployment, according to the latest report of AGETT (Asociación de Grandes Empresas de Trabajo Temporal), a national body which collects data on youth and work status.
39 per cent of all under-25’s without work live in Andalucia. More than 200,000 young people in the region are drawing dole. In a league table of which “community” has the most homes in which no-one has a job, Andalucia comes top.
Almost half of Spain´s young jobless are andaluces. To make the figures even more depressing, it is estimated by AGETT that only 46 per cent of Andalucia’s under-25’s who are out of work are actually receiving benefits.
Nine of Spain’s 17 self-governing regions report a drop in the number of jobs available for young people. Since the present economic crisis began in the autumn of 2007, youth unemployment in Spain has soared by 93.4 per cent. One in seven homes in Andalucia has no family member working.
Various reasons are offered for the region’s poor showing in the employment figures. The collapse of the construction industry since the onset of recession is a major factor, together with the high percentage of andaluces who work in tourism, which is highly seasonal and traditionally lays people off during the winter months.
The low benefits take-up is explained by Spanish benefit rules, which require a worker to have completed a year of full employment before he can qualify for dole. Most under-25’s have little opportunity of building up a history of twelve months’ unbroken employment.
