7,000 or so kilometres on a standard mountain bike is a huge undertaking for anyone. Not least of all when this accounts for just the warming up part of the journey! That journey is being undertaken by former professional Norwegian footballer Bjorn Heidenstrom who has just reached Torrevieja, Alicante, Spain on his quest to reach South Africa for the 2010 World Cup. His mission is an unusual one; not to raise money but awareness of racism and crime against those, least able to defend themselves; refugees.
His journey started back on June 19th, in Oslo and has taken him though Scandinavia, Germany, England, Ireland France, Switzerland and now Spain, to name but a few. His method of raising awareness is the collection of signed football (soccer) shirts from all levels of the beautiful game,; kids, amateurs, pubs, professional and even International teams, such as the North and South of Ireland teams. Other ‘names’ are supporting his cause such as Elton John, Sapp Blatter plus clubs such as Manchester United and City, Sheffield United and even local Rugby Clubs in La Vila Rugby Club, Villajoyosa
Bjorn now has a few days rest from the saddle while in Torrevieja, where he will be giving lectures, attending events and coaching local juvenile football teams. Bjorn still has few available dates in his diary to give inspirational talks to groups and will be meeting with TIBA and others during his stay. For those that would like to meet Bjorn and add your support, you can meet up with him on Thursday 12th November at the Sheffield United Academy training session at Torrevieja’s sports centre at 1800hrs, followed by a quiz night and presentation at the Academy Bar in Torretta II at 2100 hrs.
On Friday he has a number of private engagements but over the weekend he can found at the Rocajuna Restaurant on Saturday night where he shall be participating in a fun evening with local entertainer Kevin Tyler (they are both Liverpool fans!) where you too can have fun with the ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and ‘Be the Star You Are’ Karaoke night followed on Sunday with a presentation at FC Torrevieja’s game with Puzol at the Vincente Garcia Stadium.
Bjorn hopes to meet with the staff from the Torrevieja Town Hall on Tuesday morning before heading down the coast towards Marbella.
