THE DOG AND DUCK, SANTIAGO DE LA RIBERA
By Sally Bengtsson / 2009-08-14 12:35:00
This popular pub in Santiago de la Ribera is under new management. Andrea and Mark certainly seem to know what they are doing, as The Dog and Duck has been gaining in reputation ever since they took over.
The friendly couple ran a pub on the Lancashire – Yorkshire border for 16 years, which they were understandably sad to give up. However, Andrea had a psychic reading before they took the plunge and moved over, which was so positive she was given that extra bit of confidence necessary to make the final decision. Mark’s parents have been living in La Ribera for the past 7 years, and are helping out with the running of this popular business.
And their 17 year old daughter, Jess, is waiting tables, and mucking in, so it is obvious that the business is a real family affair. Andrea has only been here for three weeks, but is finding life just as enjoyable as she imagined. She walks home for her breaks along the beautiful Ribera beach, and is finding everyone so friendly. As she says, “We literally haven’t had a summer in the UK for the past two years, so this heat is a novelty for us.” She has been thrown in at the deep end really, as they took over at the busiest time of year. Things are going remarkably well though. The menu is basically the same for now, although they have reduced most of the prices. Their cocktail jugs are proving to be a roaring success, which is hardly surprising when you can buy a 1.5 litre jug full of tequila sunrise or a wide range of exotic cocktails from just 7.50 euros.
One thing that did take a bit of getting used to is the size of the Dog and Duck. Their pub in the Uk was much bigger, with a huge garden, etc. But the outdoor seating area here is as popular as ever.
The Dog and Duck opens every day from 9.30am to 1am. Great traditional English fayre and some of your Spanish favourites is served all day. There is a specials board, which is changed daily. Bar snacks start off at just 3 euros. All food is cooked fresh. All nationalities are welcome.
