STRIKE THREATENS HOLIDAYS ON THE COSTA BLANCA

People heading to popular tourist resorts like Benidorm and Alicante could be left on the streets as the walk out may shut hundreds of hotels. The strike action was revealed by the UGT and CCOO unions who are two of the most powerful in the area. They claim that chambermaid’s wages are the lowest in the country and should be adjusted accordingly.
“If management will not agree to new talks, the only solution will be a strike in August. Hostelry is the most important economic sector in the province. So we won’t be pushed around by the management. During the holiday season they work longer hours but earn the same as every other month of the year,” said Mateo Torres for UGT.
In 2008 there were 15.8 million Britons that visited Spain, that number is already down this year because of the ‘credit crunch’, and now more people are looking for better deals on the pound and heading for Egypt, Turkey and the like.
Spain’s economy is made up of around 11 per cent tourism so this strike could spell potential problems for the country.
