Loaded with many tubes sun cream and a variety of funny hats to ward off the sun we set out on the fairly long journey to Alicante Golf Course.
As this course is deemed difficult to find the convoy of cars stuck to strict discipline as we followed Mick the Grip Reeves who is a member at Alicante.
Arriving safely the 40 members playing were quickly organised into their teams ready to play the four ball Texas Scramble scored under the Stableford format.
Alicante had already apologised for the fact that having been held up because of rain they had just treated the first nine greens. However they were not too bad and there were no complaints from the members.
For those who know Alicante Golf Course they will be aware of the many distractions that can occur with so many house near to the course. The day we played it was Fiesta day and the many swimming pools were surrounded by people enjoying their day off. This meant that while you were preparing your putt you noticed a number of ladies in skimpy bikinis. One member blamed this fact when he missed a two inch putt, keep your eyes on the ball guys.
The scores were very close and the competition was fierce. Back at the Lo Crispin Tavern many stories were exchanged and it was obvious that everyone had enjoyed their day.
The first prize, with a Stableford score of 50 points was won by the team of – Tony French, Roger Eaglestone, Gordon Cobb and Danny Mcerlean.
In awarding the second prize the president Bill Mackay referred the team as the Mexican bandits who Rhode (not a spelling mistake) into town as member Phil Rhode had brought two of his family Stan Rhodes and Adam Rhodes to help him win. As they were called bandits it was fitting that the fourth member of the team was a Marshall in the form of Alan Marshall. They scored 49 points.
Nearest the pins were; Hole 3 – Brian Smith, Hole 6 – new member Mark Good
Hole 12 – Bob Berry, Hole 15 – Mick the grip Reeves who having sponsored our last game decided to join the society.
Our next game is on the 8th of July at the United Golf Resorts.
