RABBITS THREATEN GRAPE HARVEST

The grape harvest in the Lagunas Natural Park in Torrevieja and La Mata is being damaged by a plague of rabbits. 15% of the grape harvest has been destroyed already. This is the first time this has happened and is a serious worry for the 46 hectares which are harvested in the traditional way.
It is illegal to shoot the rabbits in this natural park at the moment, but technicians are looking at different way to deal with the problem, and are considering offering the local wine growers some form of compensation.
These are the only vines left in the area, as the majority were destroyed when the building boom was on the up, to make way for new urbanizations. The harvest is collected by 8 different farmers who produce a wine which usually goes on sale in December.
