The case of the Puerto Mayor marina in La Manga is under investigation by the European Commission, La Verdad newspaper reports this Wednesday.
The paper says the aim of the authorities in Brussels is to determine if the half-built project for 1,000 berths constitutes a negative environmental impact for the coastline and the local ecosystem.
The EC is understood to have received documentation relating to the project, including an order from the Murcia High Court stopping work at the site, and an expert report recommending that only part of the marina complex should be completed.
The High Court halt order came in 2005 after complaints from ecologists and the Environment Ministry that work at Puerto Mayor has affected the local ecosystem, has caused a beach to disappear, and has affected currents in the Canal del Estacio, the channel which connects with the Mar Menor.
