The President’s Cup was up for grabs in this week’s competition, which was once again held at Oliva Nova Golf Course.
The course is currently in outstanding condition and I would have no hesitation in recommending it to any readers who are in the area – even the tees are fast!
The complement of 39 players was swelled this week by the presence of five guests (should have been six but Sam’s guest let us down). These were Tony Valvona (was he in the Sopranos TV show?), Gerry Hayward, David Targett, Stevie Holland and Ray Clarke (who won the Guest Prize with 25 points off a handicap of 17).
Ron Webb was called upon to announce the winners of the voluntary minor competitions, the 2’s pot and the Balls in the Water estimates. Ronnie Berry converted his nearest the pin on the 3rd for the only 2 of the day, thereby taking home a cash prize which might be of interest to both Her Majesty’s Department of Revenue regarding any taxes owed and the Spanish Golf Federation regarding his amateur status! The total of 106 balls in the water was correctly guessed by Steve Legg, with the nearest on either side being Steve Patton and Sam Salmon, all of whom were grateful for the additional funds provided by last week’s carry over.
In announcing the competition winners the Captain for the Day (our Vice Captain) Brian West explained that, as there were no Divisions for the President’s Cup, two additional Nearest the Pin prizes would be awarded (after the competition is always a good time to make this information public, Brian!). The winners of these prizes were the aforementioned Ronnie Berry on the 3rd, new member Ron Hoare (nearest in two) on the 5th, Peter Brown on the 16th and nearest in two on the 18th was Ian Robertson.
Twenty six people scored 30+ stableford points this week, which was an unprecedented performance and perhaps illustrates how important the winning of this trophy is viewed by the members. It is interesting to note, though, that nobody from what would have been Division 1 figured in the prizes (was the recent Slope Rating increase a little too generous?).
Anyway, let’s move on to the results of the main Competition. In fourth place was Barry Levett with 36 points off 18.7, in third place was Stuart Butler also with 36 points but off the lower handicap of 18.5, in the Runner Up position was the ever consistent Johnnie Evans with 37 points off 22.2, losing the trophy by the narrowest of margins to John Olliffe who had the same number of points but off the lower handicap of 20.4. I’m sure many people would like to join me in congratulating John on winning the President’s Cup!
Brian West’s Parish Notices included an apology (I don’t believe it!) for his mistake last week in not including Colin Davies in the prize presentation. He also mentioned that the Friendly Match against Foressos has been cancelled (thus putting a lot of pressure on Dave Pointer’s arrangements for Thursday morning!). He went on to emphasise the need for everyone attending the dinner/dance on Saturday to make their meal choices known either to Simon at the bar, via the website or to Danny Herron via e-mail. Danny stated that almost everybody had paid for their tickets, and that he is not at all concerned about the only delinquent and that, if necessary, he would make good the shortfall! Steve Patton announced that, for those people who were unlucky in the scramble for purchasing his raffle tickets, he still has a few left and he’ll bring them next week.
Be at Oliva Nova by 8:30 next week and register on the website or call our Hon. Sec. if you wish to play. The website address is www.pegogolfsociety.net.
