Five people have been arrested in Torrevieja and Elche for defrauding 600 immigrants with false offers of work in nine fake businesses. Their arrests are part of 16 made in total across the country in Murcia, Madrid and Gijón.
The man alleged to have headed the operation is thought to have made 600,000 €, and was working as a lawyer in Torrevieja. Police say they think that he has now fled the country.
Some 600 immigrants were charged between 1,000 and 1,500 € in exchange for false offers of a job. Most of the victims were from South America, although there were also some Moroccans defrauded in the scam.
