Sunday was a painful day for many bathers swimming off the Alicante coastline where EFE reports a total of 33 people were treated for jellyfish stings. Alicante City Hall decided to raise the warning yellow flag late on Sunday afternoon, when Red Cross personnel advised that 10 people had been stung in the previous hour, after treating an initial 25 people throughout the day.
None of the cases were serious, but the Red Cross described such high numbers as out of the ordinary, particularly in the month of May.
In Cataluña, Público reports an agreement with fishing guilds to collect jellyfish before they reach the region’s beaches. They will be paid one euro for every 1.5 kilos of jellyfish caught.
