ORIHUELA FIGHTS AVE OVERGROUND TRAIN

Thousands of people took to the streets of Orihuela on Sunday 21st December, to protest at the planned route for the AVE high speed train line. The 12,000 or so protestors were joined by politicians from the PP and very few PSOE from the Vega Baja area.
The protestors want the line to be placed underground in the town, while the plan is for a bridge to take the trains some 14 metres above the Tajo-Segura water transfer pipes.
The protest was also a show of fracture in the PP party, with many noticeably absent faces. Francisco Camps, the president for the whole Valencia region, was the most talked about absence. Monica Lorente, the Mayoress of Orihuela, explained her absence by stating that she had other more pressing engagements. She went on to explain that the length of train track which they want underground is just 1.5km.
The AVE train is already behind schedule, and placing it underground would obviously add even more time onto the finishing date.
