FC Torrevieja 3 - Pego CF 0
Torry marched into second place after an emphatic win against Pego on Sunday.
Renowned for their aggression the visitors paid a heavy price for some tough tackling including 6 yellow cards and two reds. Two Torry players, Cristian Green & Bailen, both had to be substituted due to injuries, although Cristian Green will be able to take part next week it appears that Bailen, who was a target several times, has incurred a more serious injury to his upper thigh which could rule him out for at least a couple of weeks.
The home side were immediately on the attack and playing neat and attractive football. They took the lead in the 8th minute when a fantastic run by Bailen was followed by an excellent cross into the area which Cristian Green got on the end of with a diving header.
With the wind behind Torry continued to attack and as the pressure mounted they worked three corners in succession, the last of which found the head of Bailen and clipped the top of the cross bar.
In the 38th minute Cristian Green was replaced by Matias as is became evidently clear that any tactic would suffice for the visitors even if it meant high challenges, but Torry continue to battle forward going into the interval 1-0.
With the wind against them, during the second period Torry had to make sure that they keep the ball on the ground. They were now controlling the game and it was only the woodwork which prevented them extending their lead in the 58th minute.
Just 9 minutes later, after another crippling tackle on Bailen, two players were sent off when substitute Cristian (16) received his marching orders with a straight red. He was quickly followed by Miguel for dissent and he too took the long walk to an early bath.
By now the Pego players had lost control and were constantly arguing but this had no effect on the official. I have to say that all the officials were superb in their execution of the laws, especially off-sides.
With Torry playing nine men they had to regroup and attack the visitors using more down the flanks which seemed sensible as the visitors defence were mainly positioned in the middle. Torry stretched the back four constantly but it wasn't until the 88th minute when a cross by Samu found the head of substitute De Los Rios who made no mistake and put the hosts out of reach. However two minutes later Corcoles was bought down in the box. The veteran striker made no mistake as he struck the ball hard and low sending the keeper the wrong way.
Torry are now unbeaten in six matches and have not conceded a goal in 450 minutes (5 Matches). They now have the best goal difference in the league, but today they paid a heavy price for their victory as they now have Josevi, Bailen & Cristian Green on the injury list, but the good news is that they now have Heredia back after suspension, and hopefully Lotfi as it appears that his paperwork is near completion.
Next week Torry travel to Puzol on Sunday the 2nd November kick-off not yet determined but it is expected to be at 5pm, but see the website www.fctorrevieja.eu or contact Pat Stewart on 966 78 6352 or the Torry Army office on 628 942 088.
