A healthy respect for the possible danger we my face when walking the streets is an unfortunate necessity. Although muggings, assaults and abductions may not be commonplace on the Costa Blanca there have been enough documented cases to warrant a cautious suspicion of the intentions of others.

Women and the elderly often feel particularly at risk or vulnerable to the intentions of a potentially predatory passer by. Mrs Quinlan of Cabo Roig knows this fear particularly well as she has been subjected on several occasions to the exhibitionism of at least two different flashers, exposing themselves to her when she has been either walking along the paths or on the beaches in the area. Although there is a nudist beach nearby, which she has no objection too, these incidents have taken place away from this.

She told the "Leader" that she could never be certain whether they were simply indulging in perverse cheap thrills or that she may be in more serious danger. She is worried that she could have been forced off one of the steep cliffside paths and has been cornered by the tide down on the sand desperate to escape from the attention of one of these presumably unfulfilled individuals. "I am more worried of what they might do to a young girl on her own if it continues to go on," she noted.

On one occasion she was with her daughter, who challenged the man in Spanish, only for him to follow them back forcing them to jump over a wall into the urbanisation to get away. The flashers have even been unconcerned enough to expose themselves in front of her husband while another local girl has been targeted twice.

The incidents have continued for several years and she is convinced that there have been more people who have also been subjected to the same unwanted exhibitions. Now after one case in May and yet another on November 1st at Cabo Roig beach itself, she is determined to take the matter up with the police before there could be more serious consequences.

The two culprits that she has witnessed are described as both being Spanish males, one aged about 30 and the other between 55 and 60. She regretted that she could not describe them very well as she had not wanted to look at them too closely given the circumstances, but the older man had been in sunglasses, a t-shirt and a round white cap with no peak. Usually the miscreants have appeared in the early evening between 4 and 7pm. If anyone else witnesses an attack they are urged to report it to the police as otherwise they are unable to act in such cases.
