JELLYFISH STOP SWIMMING IN MARINA ALTA

The warming up of sea water is one of the causes of a big increase in the numbers of jelly fish along the coast.
Each year the number of these creatures seems to increase. Last week the high numbers meant the red flag was flying in l'Arenal de XÃ bia or la Punta del Raset in Dénia.
For years experts in sea science have been saying warmer sea temperatures are not solely blame, other factors such as over fishing, especially of the main predators of jellyfish, mainly red tuna and turtles are also a reason for the increase in numbers. Tuna fishing is now done not in the traditional fishing method of the area. Massive specially equipped boats come along the coast sweeping up all the tuna in their path. A few weeks ago Denia Port witnessed how a French fleet brought in 100,000 kg of the fish. However the numbers caught would be much higher as the majority is taken to fish farms for fattening up.
Greenpeace believes the two factors: stopping climate change and putting a halt to the capture of predators, are the answer to controlling the number of jelly fish in the Mediterranean.
