The new church of San Pedro and San Pablo was opened at the weekend by the Bishop of Orihuela - Alicante Diocese, Rafael Palmero. The church is unusual in that it has a central altar where the Latin or Western Rites will be celebrated while two adjoining chapels will be used by the Greco- Roman Catholics and the Orthodox branches of the faith.
The Bishop was accompanied by the Ukrainian Greco – Catholic, Lachovicz Dionisio, and the priest Jerzy Sowa of the Polish Society of Christ for Migrants, who will take charge of the parish
The church, situated just behind the new Torrevieja fire station in Calle Los Jasmines, is a chapel that will reflect the multicultural society within the diocese.
A spokesman for the diocese said "within the Catholic Church the celebration of the Eucharist and the liturgy responds to different rites. We are guided by the Latin or Western Rite whreas other use the Byzantine or Eastern. But the substance is the same.
The dedication was attended by hundreds of Ukrainians and Spanish worshippers. The Mayor, Pedro Hernandez, said that “this new temple incorporates the social and cultural realities of the city” while the bishop said that "it will be a place where men and women of many nationalities, will be able to live together like brothers in harmony and concord.”
