Harley Rally in San Pedro

Print | Send to a friend

By Kevin Reardon / 2005-06-02 16:21:15

In 1903 four young men created the first Harley Davidson motorcycle. A century later enthusiasts from all around the world continue to celebrate their legacy and the passion for motorcycling that they inspired. With a worldwide membership of over 800,000 people and nearly 1200 local groups the Harley Owners Group (HOG) is the largest factory-sponsored motorcycle organization in the world, and it shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. Last year was the 100th Anniversary of Harley-Davidson. A little known fact is that it marked the 23rd year the Motor Company has been associated with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). During that time, the Harley-Davidson family of customers, dealers and employees have raised more than $47 million to aid research and program services for children and adults with neuromuscular disease. The Harley Owners Group is much more than just a motorcycle organisation. It’s almost a million people around the world united by a common passion: making the Harley Davidson dream a way of life.

Harley groups are referred to as Chapters. Simply put Chapters are a family of HOG members who gather at a local level to carry out the simple mission of ‘riding and having fun’. In the local area the Murcia Chapter was established in 1990. It recently established its own website www.murciachapter.com on which it promotes the group internationally. One such promotion will take place in Lo Pagan, San Pedro del Pinatar between the 28 and 30 May, the Murcia Hog Rally, which will be attended by almost 1000 enthusiasts on a mixture of over 500 Harleys and Custom bikes. When I met with the organisers just last week they were keen to emphasise the party atmosphere that they are eager to create. They were equally keen to emphasise that everything is completely free, including lots of presents and tee shirts, and that everyone of whatever nationality or age, whether a bike owner or not, is particularly welcome to attend. Event main sponsor is the Ayuntamiento of San Pedro del Pinatar are also keen to ensure a party atmosphere. So if you are looking for a weekend which is bound to be full of fun perhaps the rally is the place to be. There are five live concerts, rock and roll and blues, featuring such established bands as Devil Trucker, Caterbourbon and Bluesfalos. Carmen Virus, I’m assured is particularly well known throughout Spain. She will be performing live at midnight on Saturday 29th. Luis La Font is President of the Valencian Magic Circle. He’ll be showing off his magic act, also on Saturday night.  There will be a motor cycle museum, free paella and sardines, games and lots, lots more and it is all absolutely free. There will also be a rally of all the bikers at 5.30 on the Saturday afternoon where all 500 machines will be ridden in convoy around Lo Pagan and San Pedro del Pinatar. That alone will be a sight not to miss. I might be a bit long in the tooth but, having met the organisers, Chapter President Andrea Soto and his P.R.O. Cedric De Mulder, I will have no reservations about going along myself to enjoy the fun. More information on the event is on the Chapter website or in English by calling Cedric on 629 405 151.
