Ricky Pow made his British debut in front of a 3,000 sell out crowd at the Hand Arena in Clevedon, Somerset, on Saturday night. The opponent was Jody Meikle from Scunthorpe, a veteran of over 26 fights, but with the object for Pow being to get rounds under his belt, the 32 year old journeyman was the ideal adversary, proving to be one of the most durable opponents the Torrevieja fighter has so far met.
Boxing on the Tyson Fury/Vinny Maddelone WBO Inter-Continental heavyweight title undercard the evening was broadcast live on Channel Five.
Also supporting Tyson were middleweight sensation Chris Eubank Junior in his fifth professional fight and British champion Lee Haskins from Bristol, who many fans will remember from his time in Torrevieja. Haskins was challenging Darlington’s Stuart Hall for the vacant European Bantamweight title.
The undefeated Pow was head and shoulders above Meikle in the talent department and this showed from the opening bell when he quickly went to work with good first round pressure. This became the pattern of the fight and in a relatively one sided contest Pow was rarely tested as his opponent had little alternative but to soak up the pressure he was continually under.
Pow landed some significant right hands as Meikle slowed from the second and with the bell coming to his rescue at the end of the 3rd and the 5th after Pow had caught him on both occasions with fierce left hooks Meikle had only survival on his mind.
This was the first time that Pow had gone the distance and with the judges handing all six rounds to the 25 year old the rising star continued his development as he improved to 8-0 in his fledgling professional career
Pow told the Leader “I’m building my record and working towards getting myself into a position to challenge for a title. This is the latest stepping stone in that process and I’m learning all the time”.
Manger Alberto Gonzalez, who together with Chris Sanigar was in Pow’s corner said “There were some big names in the crowd this evening and Ricky did his future opportunities no harm whatsoever. When the dust settles and I get back to my gym in Daya Nuevo next week I am expecting the telephone to start ringing with offers.”
