A men’s tennis tournament took place recently on the courts at the Campoamor golf club. Four players were visiting from the High Wycombe tennis club. The idea was to have 4 teams of 4 players, all playing against each other. The other 3 teams were made up of regular Wednesday morning men’s players and players from various league teams on the Costa Blanca.
However the night before the tournament, the High Wycombe captain, Joe Rylett, a regular social tennis player at Campoamor, was taken seriously ill and rushed to hospital.
A few days later and Joe is now comfortable in hospital, having suffered a minor stroke. All Joe’s friends at Campoamor wish him a speedy recovery, and if all goes well hope to see him on the tennis courts again, one day in the near future. Our thoughts also go to his wife Jane, who flew out the next day to be at his side and help with Joe’s rehabilitation.
The tennis tournament went ahead as an American style tournament, with partner and opponents drawn at random and the four players with the highest number of games won contesting a tie-break set final.
The final was a close match with Steve Maple and Franco Perez beating Sean Concannon and Roger Taylor 7 games to 6, [7-5 in the tie-break]. Anybody interested in coaching, whether individually or in groups, social tennis, or junior tennis camps at Campoamor golf or in the Guardamar area should contact Steve.
