OK Gym sponsored a spinathon last week, with all the monies raised going to a school in Gambia.
This Los Dolces gym is becoming quite renowned for its fundraising efforts. Steve Nyland, who organised the Spinathon, is a fitness instructor at the gym. He won two silver medals for cycling in the recent British Transplant Games.
The event raised 400 euros. Participants all paid 5 euros per half hour slot during the six hours the event lasted. Steve didn't dismount once. The money will go towards a new floor for the school.
The idea for the fundraising came from OK Gym's Elaine Stewart, who has been visiting Gambia for 13 years. On her first visit she decided to sponsor a child, who is now 21, and finishing college, despite a life of adversity and struggle. The fact that Elaine decided to sponsor him probably made the world of difference as to whether or not he could study and make something of his life.
After her first visit Elaine has been back every year, and has been fundraising to improve the chances for a better life for the youngsters in the country. The country has a lot of poverty and any money we send them can make a huge difference. Fifty euros can educate a child for a year. Anyone who would like to chat to Elaine about fundraising or making a donation can do so at the OK Gym in Los Dolces.
