Tuesday 18th October 2011 – Captain vs vice-Captain.....Quite a number of players to participate in the yearly contest with 28 on the list – making up 7 groups of two pairs, one for the Captain and one for the vice-Captain – and as a surprise Graham B showing up without previous notice.
A smart move according to Ray who let him play with his own group, the front nine for the Captain and the back nine for the vice-Captain and therefore ensuring a bottle of wine for himself at the end whatever the outcome!
Anyway, because of the big number of players it was decided to use the format of matchplay with full handicaps. My partner in crime was Dave S and we had to battle it out with the Danish matadors Tommy J and Kaj S. After eight holes they were just one in front but then they really raced away. Dave explained that while we had the same bad holes – too many for my taste – when Kaj sliced his tee shot away Tommy put his tee shot next to the green and the other way around, be it that Tommy scored the most holes.
Finally we lost 4 and 3. Back in the clubhouse we met Ian who couldn’t believe that playing against Geoff and Hans-Jorg P he lost the match, because Hans-Jorg scored a series of 3-for-1’s and 4-for-2’s. And he couldn’t be cut either!
At the presentation the Danish connection continued, with NTPs for Benny Jorgensen and Jan Erichsen. The outcome of the C-vC contest was 4 against 3 for the Captain’s team which consisted of Ray/Ingrid, Geoff/Hans, Sloan/William, Frank/John M, Martin/Mel, Benny/George S, and Dave/yours truly. It took some convincing to try tell Tommy and Kaj that Dave and I got the wine, when they won the match.
I don’t think that I was very successful in the end.
Afterwards we went to the restaurant Catorce in Benijofar for the AGM and a meal followed by the presentation of all prizes. At the AGM the committee was re-elected, apart from Elsa Webster, whose job as treasurer was taken over by Lyn Young. Thanks Elsa for a job well done!
At the presentation of all cups and prizes a lot of names passed by – too many to list them here – but the most prominent one to deserve mentioning that of Keith Smith, winning quite a number of cups. He might have had some difficulty in getting them all in his car to take them home. Another one may follow because the match for the Champion-of-Champions Cup still has to be played between Keith and Geoff Foster.
With that Champion still undecided the photo attached to this report will be the one of the standing committee for a change.
Next Tuesday’s competition 25th October is the monthly Medal, the last one on Greenlands for a while, so each shot counts and no pick-ups! This is open to members and guests so if you wish to play, put your name on the notice board before 2pm on the Monday before.
