Last Saturday saw the first round of a new sevens tournament organised by the rugby clubs of the Alicante province and solely aimed at age groups below the Senior Level. The idea was to almost mirror the professional world sevens tournament whereby all the teams would play at 4 different venues during May and earn points at each venue based on their final days position. With teams from Alicante University, Orihuela, Torrevieja, La Vila, Elche and Denia and covering levels from Infantiles, Cadetes, Juveniles and the newly formed ladies teams, the days rugby lived up to it's expectations of supplying some first class sevens rugby in temperatures that sometimes reached 70 degrees and ended in a thunderstorm.
Denia were really looking forward to the days matches, none more that the Denia Ladies team which ,newly formed a few months ago, worked hard throughout the day playing some open attacking rugby and deservedly winning the tournament without a loss throughout the round robin stages. With a mixture of Spanish, English and South American players, they combined brute force with an ability to run the ball when needed to secure four impressive victories and run out as the tournament winners. A great day for Denia ladies Rugby Club and we look forward to them repeating their success in the remainder of the series.
With such a lot to aim for, the Juveniles and the Cadetes gave battling performances to reach both of their respective finals to go down at the last hurdle, both times to La Vila, who to be fair, proved to be worthy winners. Denia Rugby Club can take a lot of pride out of the performances of all the players across all levels bearing in mind they were missing several key players in both teams who were not able to play on the day. Nevertheless, the new younger players they drafted in at the last minute, gave 100% and worked tirelessly to show they are in contention for selection in the rest of the tournament series. So with a winners and two runners up trophies, the club looks forward to the next stage to be held at Elche on May the 15th.
Well done to La Vila for putting on a great days rugby and well done to all the players and special thanks to Antonio Monsell who coaches the Denia Ladies team and organised the days event on behalf of the Denia Rugby Club
