Torrevieja welcomes the “Helston School Jazz Orchestra” back to the City of Salt this month for three concerts. This award winning “big band”, comprising of students, aged between 14 and 19 years, from Helston Secondary School, has been popular with Torrevieja audiences in the past and more of the same is expected next week.
However, before they fly over to Spain, their last main UK event will be to perform a special concert at a royal garden party in Cornwall before 800 invited guests including the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall – Charles and Camilla!
Since their formation back in 1989, the band has picked up a number of prestigious awards making it, arguably, the best band of its type in the whole of Great Britain! In fact, in this year’s (2012) National Concert Bands Festival, celebrated at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music, these Cornish youngsters came away with the highest award possible, the “platinum” award, having gained full marks in every category.
The adjudicators gave the band exceptionally high praise, describing them as “head and shoulders above the rest. During their summer 2010 visit to Torrevieja, many thousands of residents and visitors enthusiastically welcomed their open air concerts along seafront promenades and the municipal theatre.Their latest recording on compact disc offers such ‘big-band’ favourites as “American Patrol”, or “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”, and features some of their extremely talented solo singers on such tracks as “That Ol’ Devil Called Love” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me”. just some of the selection of music one can expect to hear during their performance.
The Helston School Jazz Orchestra will give a free performance perform next Sunday, July 15, at noon in the Doña Sinforosa Park (Playa Acequion) Bandstand. On Tuesday July 17 they give a benefit performance on behalf of AFA Alzeimers Torrevieja at 8.30pm. Tickets are just €3.00 and available from the Municipal Ticket Office or from two hours before the show, if available. Their final performance is again for free, on the La Mata seafront, on Thursday July 19 at the Plaza de Embarcadero, at 10.00pm.
